Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation and the largest city in Russia (population at January 1, 2012 - 11,629,116 people).
Moscow is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Every year millions of tourists visit the capital to see the Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil's Cathedral and Christ the Savior, Danilov and Novodevichy Convent, the Bolshoi Theatre and the Tretyakov Gallery, and more.
Despite the enormous degree of development of Moscow, the area green areas of the city is 34.3 thousand hectares (about 1/3 of the total territory of the city). There are a lot of parks and forestland such as Izmailovo Park, Timiryazevskiy park Filyevskiy Park (Forest Park), Zamoskvoretskiy park, Lublin park, Butovo forest park, botanical garden, Neskuchniy garden, Bittsevsky forest park, a museum reserve Tsaritsyno and Kolomenskoye, Kuzminki Forest Park, Forest Park Kuskovo and others. Also within the town is part of the Natural National Park Elk Island, lots of parks and recreational areas.
Age of Moscow is not exactly known. The oldest archaeological finds on the territory of Moscow belong to the Stone Age. Within the city been found a significant number of ancient settlements and other archaeological sites of later periods. Since the end of the first millennium Slavs settled in the area of modern Moscow: vyatichi and krivichi. Vyatichi constituted the bulk of the original population of Moscow. Archaeological excavations conducted in the Kremlin area, show that by the end of the XI century there already existed a settlement sheltered by shaft and a moat.
Moscow is also a major transportation hub. The city is served by 6 airports, 9 railway stations, 3 river ports (there is inland waterway to the seas of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans). Metro operates in the capital since 1935.
Moscow is a major cultural and tourist center of Russia, Europe and the world. Moscow region has one of the richest historical and cultural potentials in the Russia. There are lot of interesting places in Moscow such as various historical, cultural and architectural monuments and modern entertainment infrastructure. Moscow Kremlin, Red Square, Novodevichy Convent and Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
